Junia-T “Studio Monk”

In 2018, Junia-T made a pivotal decision to shift his focus solely toward production, stepping away from his dual role as a rapper and producer. This was also when he became the official DJ for Jessie Reyez, a move that marked a new chapter in his career. Around this period, he began hosting music sessions with various artists, initially as a way to keep the creative energy flowing. However, these sessions quickly grew into something more significant—laying the foundation for his debut solo album as a producer, Studio Monk.

When it came time to develop the visual identity for Studio Monk, Junia and I collaborated closely to find a concept that reflected both his personal evolution and the rich collaborative spirit behind the album. After exploring various ideas, we found inspiration in the timeless aesthetics of Blue Note Records, renowned for their minimalist album covers, bold typography, and monochromatic color schemes. Together, we reimagined this classic style to create a modern yet soulful design, which honored the jazz legends while embodying the collaborative and forward-thinking artistry of Studio Monk.

The result was a visual identity that set the perfect tone for Junia-T’s next chapter, capturing the depth and soul of the project. This evolution resonated with both critics and audiences, culminating in Studio Monk being shortlisted for the prestigious 2020 Polaris Music Prize for Album of the Year.
